Investigating animals on the farm

This week we have been finding out about hens.  First we had to find out what
our challenge was and 'chunk' the important information.
Then we went into groups and gave ourselves each a role;
materials manager, task manager and time keeper.
After this we did some research in information books.

When we had finished looking at the text and pictures we started to create our posters.
We had 40 minutes to complete the task.
Each group made bright and interesting posters telling us about hens and chickens.

In the Wizard's Kitchen

We started our topic this term by sorting different materials.  We worked well with our friends to make 3 groups of items.  One group agreed to label their sets by materials.  This was wood, plastic and metal. The other group decided to think of ways they could use each of the objects. Their groups were things for an emergency, things to make and use and special tools.

We are going to be doing lots of tests and experiments with different materials.
The first we did was to find the best material for a shoelace.  We had to find out how strong it was, if it was bendy enough to tie and if it fitted in our shoes.  I wonder if we all agreed on the best material?

Our second experiment was to help Mrs Fairlywellorganised find a material to wrap her Christmas presents.  Once we had tested each of the materials we recorded our results on a sheet. We also talked about how important it is to complete each test fairly.

Learning to tell the time

We have been learning to tell the time on analogue and digital clocks.  We are growing in confidence reading times for o'clock and half past.

Our visit to the public library

On Thursday we went to the Kirkwall library to choose information books for our project.  When we found a book we thought was interesting we went to the desk and got it stamped out.

We also got to see some of the artefacts.  There were lots of things to look at and we had to remember to handle them carefully.

Our visit to Kirkwall harbour

We walked to Kirkwall harbour to find out about the different boats and think about what they might be used for.  We had a great time and even saw a few boats come into the pier.

Learning about wheels and axles

As part of our work about land transport we investigated which shapes would make good wheels.  Then we went on to learn about axles.  It was fun building our own vehicles.

How many common nouns can you find?

We have been learning about common nouns and went outside to see how many we could write on our sheets.  We had to find objects beginning with different letters in the alphabet.  I wonder who found the most?

Traffic survey on Pickaquoy Road

Our topic this term is 'On the Move'.  Last Monday, we went outside to find out about the different types of vehicles which passes Glaitness School.  We worked together to make a table.  Then we returned to the class and made up our own bar graphs.  I wonder what type of transport was post popular?
