Learning to tell the time

We have been learning to tell the time on analogue and digital clocks.  We are growing in confidence reading times for o'clock and half past.

Playing cricket

This term we have been learning the skills of cricket.  We have practised how to throw the ball, how to use a bat and run in to a safe area.  It has been fun working in teams and trying to score most points.

Poetry

This term we have been looking at Poetry and all the different kinds of poems you can get. Mrs Reid gave us a challenge to try to remember a Scottish Poem in time for St Andrews Day.

This is the Poem we had to try and learn:

The Wee Rid Motor
By Sandy Thomas Ross

In my wee rid motor,
I can gang for miles,
Up and doon the gairden,
Through the lobby whiles.

Mony a bigger motor
Gangs tae toons afaur.
Nane can gang whaur I gang
In my wee rid caur.

Today in class we all said our poems in front of the rest of the class we were a little nervous but we all tried really hard and did our best. Here are some of us saying our poems.

Investigating a famous person

We have been doing lots of work in our topic this week.  One of the tasks we found really interesting was learning about Louis Braille.  We listened to the story about why and how he created braille and afterwards asked lots of questions.  Then we sequenced his life story.  The following session we wrote some words in braille.  Some of us even started to write our own names.

The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark

This week we have started reading 'The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark'.  It is about a baby owl called Plop who likes to explore the world during the day.
We designed our own owls and thought of an action it could be doing.  When we are finished we will make a class display about owls and verbs.

A few of us have also made pompoms and added features to make our own baby owls.  I wonder what we will call them?

Researching the past

We have been investigating washing in the past.  We worked with our partner to read an information book and then recall some details about what we had learned.  When we shared our new knowledge with the class we discovered we had learned lots of things.

Children in Need in Class 2

We all had great fun on Friday raising money for Children in Need.  We made our own Pudsey masks, made models for him to live in and lots of other activities.  At playtime, we were lucky enough to have our photo taken with Pudsey.  We felt good helping other boys and girls in different parts of the country.

Learning about the past at Tankerness Museum

We had a very interesting visit to Tankerness Museum this week.  After walking there with our friends from 2T we split into two groups.  Our class started at the top of the museum, looking at items from the 1900's. We worked our way back through time and finished by looking at artefacts from the Stone Age.  Each of us saw something we were particularly interested in, from the delicate wedding dress to the gas masks from World War 2.

After returning to school, we decided  to set up our own class museum.  I wonder what interesting items we will have?

Our visit to the public library

On Thursday we went to the Kirkwall library to choose information books for our project.  When we found a book we thought was interesting we went to the desk and got it stamped out.

We also got to see some of the artefacts.  There were lots of things to look at and we had to remember to handle them carefully.

Our visit to Kirkwall harbour

We walked to Kirkwall harbour to find out about the different boats and think about what they might be used for.  We had a great time and even saw a few boats come into the pier.

Learning about wheels and axles

As part of our work about land transport we investigated which shapes would make good wheels.  Then we went on to learn about axles.  It was fun building our own vehicles.

How many common nouns can you find?

We have been learning about common nouns and went outside to see how many we could write on our sheets.  We had to find objects beginning with different letters in the alphabet.  I wonder who found the most?

Traffic survey on Pickaquoy Road

Our topic this term is 'On the Move'.  Last Monday, we went outside to find out about the different types of vehicles which passes Glaitness School.  We worked together to make a table.  Then we returned to the class and made up our own bar graphs.  I wonder what type of transport was post popular?

The Paralympics in Class 2

We have been learning about the Paralympics taking place in London. We started this work by investigating the values of the Games.  Can you list them?  We hope we can include these in the life of our classroom too.
