Having fun at 'The Venue'

This morning we went to 'The Venue'.  We took part in different art and craft activities; making animals from paper plates, book marks and puppets.
Everyone also worked together to create a jungle picture, a football scene and imaginative image.
We all had a great time.

Litter collecting at the Peedie Sea

In Class 2 we have been thinking about how we can look after the environment and make a difference to the local community.  Following a litter survey, this week we went back to the paths at the Peedie Sea and collected all the litter we could find.  We worked in small groups and each took a role in helping gather all the rubbish which was lying around.

We have also been busy thinking of possible ways to prevent litter being dropped on the paths and grass.  This week we have written letters to different people asking for their help.
Another idea we had was to design a logo to encourage everyone to take care of the environment.  This is some of our initial ideas.

Sports Day in Class 2

On Friday we had our day of sports at Picky.
In the morning we went and did lots of activities in the arena.

We also went outside and practised some of our rugby skills.

At lunchtime we all sat outside and had a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon everyone in the school went back to Picky.
We did four different races including the hoop race and the sack race.
We all tried really hard to win points for our teams.

At the end we sat together with the rest of the school to hear which team had the most points.
The winners were the red team, Ayre.

Investigating animals on the farm

This week we have been finding out about hens.  First we had to find out what
our challenge was and 'chunk' the important information.
Then we went into groups and gave ourselves each a role;
materials manager, task manager and time keeper.
After this we did some research in information books.

When we had finished looking at the text and pictures we started to create our posters.
We had 40 minutes to complete the task.
Each group made bright and interesting posters telling us about hens and chickens.

Visit to a local farm

Last week we went on a visit to Quanterness farm to find out more about farm animals and how you look after them.  We found out lots of interesting information and asked lots of great questions.
For some of us it was our first visit to a farm and there were lots of sights, sounds and smells to get used to!

Our trip to the Auction Mart

On Monday we went to Orkney Auction Mart with our friends from Class 2T.  It was a long walk but we all did really well.  On the way we saw boats coming into the pier and baby lambs in the fields.

First we went to the balcony to see the cattle that were for sale.  We asked lots of interesting questions about farming and farm animals.

Then we went to the ring to watch some of the cattle being sold.  The auctioneer talked really fast and we found it hard to understand what he was saying.  We all watched mezmorised!

Litter Survey at the Peedie Sea

Last Friday we went a walk around the paths at the Peedie Sea.  We were looking to see how much litter we could find.

Sadly, we found quite a lot of plastic and food packaging.  We decided we should go back and help clean up the area.  This will help the 'Pick Up 3 Pieces' campaign.

Visiting the local community

On the final Wednesday of the term we went to St Rognvald's Residential Home.  We played all of the Orcadian and Australian songs we had been learning in Figurenotes.  Everyone did really well and  returned to school feeling proud.

Skipping for the British Heart Foundation

We had a busy day at the end of term completing our sponsored skip.  It was great to have our friends from Primary 5 there to encourage us and showw us some of the skills they had learned.

Before we started, we took part in a warm up with Mrs Linklater.  Then we were all set to go!

We all worked hard to complete as many skips as we could in 5 minutes.  A few people were absent due to illness so they will have the opportunity to complete the challenge at the start of the term.
We were very grateful for the juice the staff at Picky gave us at the end.

I wonder how many skips these people did?

Another orienteering opportunity

On Thursday we went to Mudddisdale to try another orienteering activity.  This time we were focusing on finding different Scottish landmarks.
We set out at top speed to find the different markers!

Each time we found a picture we had to return to base and mark our chart the correct colour.

We all co-operated with our partners and made great teams.

Learning about the Chinese New Year

We are going to be doing some work on the Chinese New Year and last week we were lucky to have a visit from Bobby Lam.  He shared lots of information about the festival and showed us some interesting items.

Pancake making in Class 2

Last week we worked together to make some pancakes.  We followed each of the instructions carefully and then enjoyed eating the finished product.
Can you describe what we are doing in each picture?

Orienteering at Muddisdale

Last week we went up to Muddisdale and did some orienteering.  We worked in pairs to find different Scottish animals.  Everyone worked well with their friend and followed the instructions carefully.  We were all tired when we returned to school!
